Get CPU Core Temp direct from AMD CPU

Postby Dukmiester2 » Fri Sep 29, 2006 1:55 am

Hi. I hope I am posting this in the right place.
I have recently just discovered that the temp.
reading being reported by my motherboard is
significantly off (about 20 degrees C too low!).

This wrong temp. is also seen in my BIOS setup, so
I know it must be getting read by the on-board
IT8712F chip.

I did a check using a different program which
directly reads the CPU Core temp from my
AMD k8 4400+ CPU.

Currently, my BIOS AND Hmonitor are reporting a CPU
temp of 69.8 F (20 C) when the temp in the room where my
PC is is actually 73.4 F!

I have also set Hmonitor to generate a DATA log every 2
seconds and then ran a VERY graphic/CPU intense game
and the temp NEVER is reported to have gone over 22 C.

The other program, the one that is reading directly from my
CPU Core, is reporting a core temp of 39 C at idle and
up to about 47 C under heavy load, which is a lot
more realistic, and probably more accurate.

My Motherboard is only a couple of weeks old, and the Manufacturer
is willing to get me an RMA for it, but this would mean signifiicant
down time, I would have to remove and then re-install my CPU
and FAN/Heatsink.

I am currently having no other issues with my PC or
Hmonitor, but I would like to be able to get reliable
temp. readings of my CPU.

Is there ANY chance that Hmonitor could be coded to get an additional
temp reading DIRECTLY from an AMD CPU (K8 4400+ in my case)
and have that be set as CPU1 in Hmonitor instead of getting it's
reading from the (obviously flawed) IT8712F chip?

I much prefer Hmonitor's simple setup, yet very useful
info it provides.

I just hate the thought of having to re-build my PC again JUST
for an accurate temp. readout.

I know this isn't Hmonitor's fault, I am just asking if the above
mentioned addition/change is possible.

My current setup:
Mach Speed Motherboard model MK8-939A
VIA Chipset: K8T890 Northbridge VT 8237R Southbridge
AMD CPU 4400+

Thanks for any input.
